I've spent money building things before anyone had tasted the food. The logo, the website, the product, all before I knew if anyone actually wanted it.
Don't build the whole restaurant first.
The $0 taste test
Before you spend anything, have one real conversation with someone who has the problem you want to solve. Not your biggest fan. Someone who actually lives with that problem.
Ask them three questions:
- "What have you already tried to fix this?"
- "What did that cost you, in time or money?"
- "If someone helped you with this, what would that need to look like?"
Then, and this is the hard part, just listen. Don't pitch. Take notes.
One real conversation is the first test, and it costs $0.
"But I don't have customers yet."
That's exactly who the taste test is for. You're not selling. You're learning. Three conversations will teach you more than three months of planning alone.
What to do with what you hear
- If people describe the problem the way you do, you're onto something.
- If they've already paid to fix it, that's a strong sign people will pay.
- If nobody cares, you just saved yourself a lot of time and money. That's a win, too.
This is Certainty, the second of the 3 Breakthrough Keys: real-world proof before you spend.
